Prosecute chiefs selling lands in waterways — Ga Mantse

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for chiefs who are involved in selling lands in waterways and flood-prone areas to be arrested and prosecuted.

He made the statement on Thursday, May 28, during a visit to communities affected by flooding after the Weija Dam spill.

The flooding has submerged many homes and shops, forcing residents to move their belongings to safer places.

Speaking to journalists during the tour, the Ga Mantse said some traditional leaders are partly responsible for the constant flooding because they allow people to build on lands meant to serve as waterways and green areas.

He said such actions should not be ignored, and those responsible must face the law.

“Chiefs who are selling lands in flood-prone areas and places that are supposed to remain green areas must be held accountable,” he said.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II also called on authorities to strictly enforce building regulations and environmental laws to help prevent future flooding in affected communities.

Although he admitted that demolishing buildings put up in unauthorised areas may be difficult and painful for affected residents, he stressed that it is necessary to save lives and protect property.

“We believe that everything is on course. What we are asking is that government agencies, the Regional Minister, and the MMDAs enforce the by-laws. Nobody should be allowed to build in waterways. If it is wrong, it is wrong, and we have to deal with it,” he said.

“Demolitions are painful, and I sympathise with those affected, but we will have to enforce the laws because these situations continue to cause loss of life,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says evacuation efforts have started to move affected residents to safe places.
