The New Tafo-Akim District Police Command is investigating a tragic motorbike accident that killed a school nurse in the Eastern Region during the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026.
In a statement released by the Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, police said they received a report around 1:30 a.m. about an accident near the Lakeside washing bay at OPASS Junction.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying close to his Royal motorbike, which had the registration number M-23-UE 424. He had suffered serious injuries.
The victim was quickly taken to the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital for treatment, but sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He was later identified as Edward Cann, a 36-year-old school nurse at Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS).
According to the police, initial investigations suggest that Mr Cann was riding from Kukurantumi towards OPASS Junction when the accident happened.
Police believe he may have forgotten to remove the motorbike’s kickstand before riding.
The kickstand is said to have hit the road while the bike was moving, causing him to lose control and crash.
His body has been placed at the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The motorbike has also been taken to the New Tafo Police Station to help with investigations.
The Police Service expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and the entire OPASS community following the sad incident.
