A joint security team in Nkwanta has intercepted a large quantity of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations, leading to the arrest of two suspects.

In a statement released on May 17, 2026, the Oti Regional Police Headquarters said the first operation took place at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.

Officers stopped a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P for inspection.

During a search of the vehicle, security personnel discovered 750 live J/G cartridges hidden inside a black polythene bag.

The bag contained three brown boxes, with each box carrying 250 rounds of ammunition.

Police identified the suspect as Hudu Mahama, a 53-year-old driver’s mate on the bus. According to the police, he admitted ownership of the ammunition during initial questioning.

Later that same day, a joint Police and Military team carried out another operation in the area.

During a chase involving a motorbike rider, officers recovered a box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after the box reportedly fell from the suspect’s motorbike.

The rider, however, escaped with a second box of ammunition, the statement said.

Further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect, Christian Kwasi Alonise, aged 57.

Police said both suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations. Security officers are also working to recover the missing box of ammunition and arrest the fleeing rider.
