Police crack down on suspected human trafficking ring, arrest 186 in Ashanti region

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 186 suspects, including 96 Nigerians and four Togolese nationals, during a major intelligence-led operation against organised crime in the Ashanti Region.

The operation, carried out between June 8 and 17, 2026, involved the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

According to police, the exercise targeted criminal networks linked to human trafficking, sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms, and other organised crimes.

Based on intelligence and surveillance, police conducted coordinated raids in Asafo, Kenyase Aframa, Asokwa, Buokrom, Krofrom, Atonsu-Bokuro, Asawase, and Old Tafo Ahenbronum.

The suspects arrested include 86 Ghanaians, 96 Nigerians, and four Togolese nationals.

A breakthrough came on June 9 at Kenyase Aframa, where police arrested Gladys Ibrahim, popularly known as “Mama Gee,” together with 100 foreign nationals believed to be connected to a transnational criminal network.

Police said several victims, including minors, were rescued during the operation and placed under protective care in line with child protection procedures.

Foreign victims are also being processed with support from the Ghana Immigration Service for immigration formalities and possible repatriation.

The Police Service praised the professionalism of the Special Operations Team and the Ashanti Regional Police Command, adding that investigations are ongoing to arrest other members of the suspected network.

All suspects remain in custody or are assisting with investigations as police continue efforts to combat organised crime and improve public safety.
