Sarkodie calls out disrespect towards music as a career

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has spoken out against what he sees as a lack of respect for music as a career.

He believes many people still fail to treat the creative industry as a serious profession.

In a post shared on X on Sunday, April 26, 2026, the iconic award-winning artist reacted to a common question musicians often hear about having other “proper business” ventures outside their craft.

“That question ‘apart from music, what business do you do? Like, a proper business?’ honestly comes off as a bit insulting,” he wrote.

He explained that such comments reduce the value of music and ignore its real impact.

According to him, the global music industry supports many people, including producers, managers, and other professionals who rely on it for their livelihoods.

Sarkodie emphasised that people should view music as a serious business, just like any other well-known industry.

“Music is actually one of the biggest industries in the world, and in many cases, it’s just as serious (if not more) than what people like to call ‘proper businesses,’” he stated.

His remarks have added fresh energy to ongoing discussions about how society values creative work, both in Ghana and across the world.
