Methodist Church breaks silence on viral video of member labelling bishop as “thief”

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Reverend Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has addressed a viral video featuring a church member who referred to a bishop as a “thief”, underscoring the importance of forgiveness, compassion, and spiritual contemplation.

In a statement released on the church’s official X platform (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Church cited scripture to contextualise its response, quoting Jesus in John 9:39: “I came into this world for judgement, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind”.

The statement clarified that the widely circulated incident on social media was not a recent occurrence; it was characterised as “an old story” rather than a current event.

The Church disclosed that it had already addressed the situation through appropriate channels, extending “love and compassion” to the member involved, who was depicted in a contentious exchange with a minister regarding tithing.

The Presiding Bishop praised the minister for exercising restraint, stating, “We thank God for the maturity demonstrated by the minister in not continuing the exchanges”.

He also recognised the member’s regret, adding, “We are grateful to the member for her apology”.

Emphasising the emotional impact of the public backlash, the Church expressed concern for the individual at the heart of the controversy.

“She is hurting by the public attacks. Mama, our love for you is unconditional,” the statement conveyed, reaffirming the Church’s dedication to care and reconciliation.

The message concluded with a reminder of the Christian principle of forgiveness: “It is the gracious forgiveness of Jesus that keeps us all. Blessings”.
