Bawumia urges NPP communicators to defend democracy

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party communicators to remain steadfast and defend Ghana’s democratic principles amid what he describes as growing political intimidation under the administration of John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia has expressed concern over what he termed an erosion of democratic norms, warning that Ghana’s democratic credentials are increasingly coming under threat.

He urged party faithful to remain vigilant and committed to upholding the rule of law and freedom of expression.

“Ghana’s democratic credentials are under attack,” he stated, stressing the need for NPP communicators to speak up against actions that could undermine the country’s democratic foundations.

His remarks come against the backdrop of reported arrests and harassment of some NPP activists in recent months.

Party officials have cited instances where supporters and communicators have been picked up by security agencies, homes ransacked over comments made on political platforms, raising concerns about freedom of speech and political tolerance.

In some cases, NPP activists have reportedly been invited by security agencies for questioning over social media posts and public commentary deemed critical of government actions.

Dr. Bawumia argued that such developments risk creating a climate of fear among political actors, CSOs and journalist, which could weaken democratic participation.

He emphasised that Ghana’s democracy has been built on tolerance, open dialogue, and respect for dissenting views, and warned against any attempts to reverse these gains.

The NPP flagbearer further encouraged party communicators to remain professional in their engagements while firmly defending the party’s ideals and policies.

He noted that the role of communicators is critical in shaping public discourse, particularly in a politically charged environment.
