The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has raised an alarm over worsening flood conditions in parts of the constituency, warning residents to exercise extreme caution as rising water levels have already submerged several homes following the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.
According to the MP, water levels in affected communities have risen beyond six feet in some areas, making movement and rescue operations extremely difficult as the situation continues to worsen.
He explained that the combination of heavy rainfall and the ongoing controlled spillage by Ghana Water Limited has intensified flooding in low-lying communities downstream of the dam.
The MP urged residents in flood-prone areas to immediately relocate to safer locations to avoid loss of life, stressing that the situation could deteriorate further if rains persist.
“The water levels are now beyond six feet in some communities. I am urging all residents to take this seriously and move to safer grounds immediately,” he said.
He added that emergency response teams, including NADMO and local authorities, have been deployed to assist affected residents and monitor the situation.
According to him, several homes have already been submerged, with property damage reported as families struggle to salvage belongings amid rising waters.
“We are working with NADMO and other agencies to ensure that affected residents are supported, but safety must come first,” he said.
The MP further called on authorities managing the Weija Dam to ensure proper coordination and timely communication during spillage operations to minimise the impact on surrounding communities.
Residents have also expressed concern over the recurring nature of flooding in the area, blaming poor drainage systems, encroachment on waterways, and inadequate urban planning for the worsening situation.
Emergency officials continue to monitor water levels closely as rainfall persists, with authorities warning that further flooding may occur if conditions do not improve.
