An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Nana Adwoa Yamoah, a 35-year-old self-proclaimed spiritualist, to three years in prison for defrauding an individual of GH¢95,100.
Yamoah, who operated in Teshie, Accra, pleaded guilty to defrauding by false pretences and practising without registration and a licence.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong, who was prosecuting, informed the court, which was presided over by Dennis Eyram Fumey, that the complainant, Douglas Abu, is unemployed and lives in Ntotroso, Ashanti Region.
He stated that in 2025, a witness named Grace Fosua introduced Abu to Yamoah, presenting her as a spiritualist.
The prosecution alleged that Yamoah claimed to have connections with the Asantehene and could assist Abu in becoming the chief of Ntotroso.
Relying on that claim, she solicited various amounts of money from Abu, assuring him that he would be installed as chief by January.
The court was informed that Yamoah also extracted GH¢51,000 from Abu under the false pretense of doubling the amount, but she did not fulfil this promise.
Additionally, she convinced Abu to accompany her to Benin for spiritual enhancement at his cost, yet no such activity took place.
ASP Oppong noted that Abu eventually grew suspicious and requested a refund, but Yamoah did not return the funds.
Abu later reported the incident to the Police, which resulted in her arrest on March 9, 2026.
During the investigation, Yamoah requested additional time to repay the money but failed to do so.
The investigation also revealed that she was not registered with the Traditional Medicine Practice Council and had employed similar tactics to defraud others.
The court found her guilty based on her own admission.
The sentencing was initially postponed pending a pregnancy test, which returned negative, after which she received a three-year custodial sentence.
