Jinapor announces new transmission line to resolve low voltage in Volta region

Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has announced plans to construct a new power transmission line to address persistent low-voltage challenges in the Volta Region.

The announcement was made during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise electricity supply across the country.

According to the Minister, the problem of low voltage in the region is longstanding and largely due to infrastructure limitations.

“Volta Region, we have a peculiar problem that we inherited,” he stated.

He explained that, unlike other parts of Ghana that benefit from multiple high-capacity transmission lines, some communities in the Volta Region lack adequate infrastructure, resulting in unstable and fluctuating power supply over the years.

Despite the challenges, he stressed that the government is focused on delivering solutions rather than dwelling on past constraints.

“But we are not just complaining. We are finding solutions,” he added.

As part of the intervention, the Minister disclosed that a new  161kV transmission line from Asepe to Ho will be constructed, alongside the installation of upgraded transformers to improve voltage stability.

He noted that the project will significantly reduce pressure on the existing network by providing a dedicated supply line to Ho, one of the major load centres in the region.

“When you take them off and give them that dedicated line, the remaining smaller towns or communities will see a boost in the voltages,” he explained.

The Minister further assured residents of the Volta and Oti Regions that the government remains committed to resolving the issue permanently.

“And we are determined to deal with that,”  he emphasised.

The planned transmission line forms part of a broader strategy to upgrade Ghana’s power infrastructure and ensure a reliable electricity supply, particularly in undeserved regions where demand has outpaced existing capacity.

Preparatory works for the project are expected to begin soon, with stakeholder engagements scheduled in the Volta Regional capital, Ho, in the coming days.
