Ghana Card holders in Canada can travel home without visa – NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) says the Ghana Card will help Ghanaians living abroad travel more easily and make it simpler to confirm their identity in other countries.

Speaking on April 10, the NIA’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, explained that they are working with foreign embassies to make the Ghana Card more widely accepted.

The goal is to have embassies include the Ghana Card as part of visa application requirements, although each country makes its own rules.

“We are still having conversations with embassies. These are states on their own, so you cannot force them unless through civil engagement. We are doing that and exploring the possibility of embassies requesting the Ghana Card when you apply for a visa. So far, it has been positive, and we are hopeful we can strike that deal,” he stated.

Mr. Darlas also said that Ghanaians living abroad already enjoy some benefits. For example, those with a Ghana Card can travel back home more easily, especially from places like Canada.

“For those in the diaspora, if you are a Ghanaian and you have a Ghana Card and you want to travel from Canada to Ghana, you do not need to acquire a Ghanaian visa. With just the Ghana Card, you get your ticket and fly to Ghana,” he explained.

He added that this effort is part of a bigger plan to make the Ghana Card recognised worldwide, so it can help Ghanaians move around more easily and handle official processes without stress.
