The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has arrested some commercial drivers at the Kingsway lorry station for allegedly charging passengers transport fares that had not been approved by the relevant authorities.
The arrests were made during a special enforcement exercise conducted by the Assembly’s taskforce following reports that some “trotro” drivers had increased fares without authorisation.
According to the AMA, the operation was launched in response to complaints from commuters who accused some commercial drivers of imposing arbitrary fare increases despite the absence of any officially sanctioned adjustment.
The taskforce visited the Kingsway transport terminal, where several drivers were apprehended for allegedly disregarding the approved fare structure.
The Assembly reiterated that any review of public transport fares must be agreed upon through consultations involving the appropriate regulatory authorities and transport unions before implementation.
AMA officials warned commercial drivers against introducing unilateral fare increases, stressing that such actions violate existing transport directives and place an unnecessary financial burden on passengers.
“Transport fares can only be adjusted after the required consultations and official approval. Any driver found charging unapproved fares will face the appropriate sanctions,” the Assembly emphasised.
The Assembly also appealed to the public to support its enforcement efforts by reporting drivers who charge fares above the approved rates.
