Former Chelsea winger Willian has revealed how a late intervention from the club prevented him from joining Tottenham despite having completed a medical with the north London side.
The Brazilian, who spent seven years at Chelsea, said he had decided to remain in London after leaving the Blues and was prepared to join Tottenham if Chelsea no longer wanted him.
Speaking in an interview, Willian recalled the moment he travelled to Tottenham’s training ground to complete the move.
“I wanted to stay in London, so if Chelsea didn’t want me, I would go to Spurs,” he said.
Willian explained that although he had completed his medical, he began questioning the decision on the morning he was expected to sign his contract.
“I was in the car going to the training ground and I was saying to myself, ‘I don’t want to go. I want Chelsea, but I have to go because Chelsea doesn’t want me,’” he recalled.
However, the situation changed dramatically when he arrived at Tottenham’s training ground.
According to Willian, his agent informed him that Chelsea had made an offer for him.
“I thought maybe I failed the medical, but he said, ‘Chelsea made an offer!’ I said, ‘What?! Let’s go there!’”
Willian ultimately returned to Chelsea, where he continued his career before later leaving the club.
