Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has made a remarkable start to life at Deportivo La Coruña, scoring in each of the club’s first two LaLiga matches since returning to Spain’s top division.
The 37-year-old Gabonese striker joined Deportivo in July on a free transfer from French side Olympique de Marseille, signing a contract until June 2028.
Despite concerns about his age, Aubameyang has quickly shown that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level. He scored Deportivo’s only goal in their opening league match against Elche, which ended 1-1 at Riazor.
He then found the net again in Deportivo’s second match, a 1-1 draw away against newly promoted Málaga. Aubameyang opened the scoring with a composed finish after receiving a pass from Luismi Cruz, before Málaga equalised from the penalty spot.
The two goals mean Aubameyang has scored all of Deportivo’s goals in their first two league games. His performances have also earned him the player-of-the-match award in both matches, according to Spanish reports.
His impressive start has already placed him alongside some of Deportivo’s greatest goal scorers. The Gabon international now has the opportunity to match a record achieved by Brazilian legend Bebeto during the 1992/93 season.
Bebeto scored in each of his first three LaLiga appearances for Deportivo, finding the net against Celta Vigo, Sevilla and Osasuna. He went on to enjoy a historic campaign, finishing as LaLiga’s top scorer with 29 goals.
Aubameyang could equal that record if he scores against Valencia in Deportivo’s next league match on August 30.
Deportivo are unbeaten after two games, although both matches have ended in draws.
