Queiroz defends Thomas-Asante’s limited minutes

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has explained why forward Brandon Thomas-Asante had limited playing time during Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese coach said the Coventry City striker was only used when the team needed him.

Thomas-Asante made an important impact during the tournament by providing the assist for one of Ghana’s only two goals. His cross helped secure a 1-0 victory over Panama in the group stage.

Despite his impressive performance as a substitute against Panama, he was left out of Ghana’s Round of 32 match against Colombia. He later played 20 minutes in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia.

Speaking to Sporty TV after the match, Queiroz was asked why Thomas-Asante, who was one of Ghana’s most effective attacking players during the tournament, did not feature more often.

“He Thomas-Asante played when it was necessary to play I’m disappointed with the result because the boys, they work hard, they tried their best but the reality is on the day, especially in the passing and controlling of the game, the Colombia team was better.”
