United States President, Donald Trump has joined growing criticism over ticket prices for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that even he would not pay the current cost to attend the U.S. Men’s National Team’s opening match against Paraguay.
Speaking about the prices in an interview, Trump reacted with surprise after learning that some tickets for the match were selling for more than $1,100.
“I did not know that number,” Trump said. “I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay it either, to be honest with you.”
The USA will face Paraguay in its opening game of the tournament in June, but many fans have complained that ticket prices are too expensive for ordinary supporters.
Reports indicate that the cheapest tickets in FIFA’s main categories for the match initially cost around $1,120, sparking outrage across social media and among football fan groups.
FIFA has faced heavy criticism in recent months over its ticket pricing system for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Many supporters believe the governing body’s use of dynamic pricing has made tickets unaffordable for average fans.
Football Supporters Europe, one of the major fan organizations in the sport, described the prices as “extortionate” and accused FIFA of betraying loyal supporters.
The group also joined consumer organizations in filing complaints over the pricing structure.
Fans have also complained about limited ticket availability, confusing seating allocations, and rising resale prices. Some supporters claimed they paid premium prices only to receive seats in less desirable sections of stadiums.
Despite the backlash, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the pricing model, arguing that ticket prices reflect demand and market conditions in the United States.
