Amapiano is more profitable than rap music,” claims Shallipopi

Nigerian rapper and vocalist, Shallipopi, has disclosed the reasons behind his transition from rap to singing.

In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the artist known for the hit ‘Cast’ elaborated that he initially gained fame as a rap artist but turned to Amapiano for financial benefits.

He stated that Amapiano offers greater financial rewards compared to rap music.

“I have been rapping for a while. I am a trap star. They made me do Amapiano. It is Amapiano that brings food to the table, so we will do it. I will drag it with them,” he remarked.

Shallipopi expressed that rap was his “first love,” yet he faced challenges in generating significant income from it, partly due to the preferences of Nigerian music fans and a lack of support.

Regarding his decision to decline the Headies award for Best Rap Song, which was awarded to his track ‘Cast’ last year, Shallipopi explained that he turned it down because the organisers tried to categorise him solely as a rapper.

He maintained that awards should have been presented in both singing and rapping categories.
