Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has called for unity at the club as tensions continue to grow around striker Julián Álvarez and his uncertain future.
Álvarez was booed by Atlético supporters during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The Argentine forward came on in the second half but was met with more jeers from sections of the home crowd amid ongoing transfer speculation linking him with a move away from the Spanish club.
After the match, Álvarez did not join his teammates in greeting the supporters. Simeone explained that the decision was made by the club and was not the player’s choice.
“The club made the decision to keep him away and have him head to the dressing room,” Simeone said, making it clear that Álvarez had not personally decided to avoid the fans.
The situation comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old striker. Reports have linked him with possible moves to Barcelona and Arsenal, increasing tension between the player and Atlético supporters.
Simeone, however, refused to advise the fans on how they should react to the situation. Instead, he said his responsibility was to concentrate on his work and help Atlético compete for major trophies.
The Argentine coach stressed that the club must remain united if it wants to challenge for titles.
“We need forwards, and we need important forwards,” Simeone said, highlighting the importance of strengthening the team’s attack.
He made the comments after Atlético were held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal in their opening home league match. The hosts were reduced to 10 men after Robin Le Normand was sent off, but Giuliano Simeone, Diego’s son, scored late to rescue a point for Atlético.
