Ronaldo says 2026 World Cup will be his last

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final one of his career, saying he has already made the decision to step away from the tournament after this year’s edition.

The Portuguese captain, who is leading the Portugal national football team at the global showpiece, said he is enjoying the competition but will not feature in another World Cup after 2026.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s round of 16 clash against Spain in Arlington, Texas, Ronaldo revealed.

“I am enjoying this World Cup, the fans and the people. And it’s going to be my last World Cup for sure, the decision is made,” Ronaldo reportedly said.

The 41-year-old forward, who has played at multiple World Cups since his debut in 2006, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, with a career spanning more than two decades at the highest level.

Ronaldo also shared a light-hearted moment from off the pitch, recalling an interaction with an airline crew member he believed was Argentine.

He joked about the encounter, saying he told the attendant that his wife is Argentine, easing the tension in a playful exchange that reflects his well-known personality off the pitch.

The announcement has sparked emotional reactions among fans worldwide, as it signals the approaching end of an era in international football.

Ronaldo’s long-standing rivalry with Argentina’s Lionel Messi has also helped define modern football’s greatest generation.

Since making his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo has broken numerous records, including becoming the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football.

He has also led Portugal to major success, including their historic UEFA Euro 2016 triumph.

His retirement would mark a major transition period for Portugal, as the team gradually shifts toward younger talents while still relying on his leadership and experience.
