Players shouldn’t decide hydration break rules — Mbappé

France captain Kylian Mbappé has urged football authorities not to rely too heavily on players’ opinions when discussing hydration breaks during matches, arguing that players often react based on the situation they find themselves in on the pitch.

Speaking about the growing debate surrounding cooling and hydration breaks, particularly during tournaments played in hot weather conditions, Mbappé admitted that players’ views can change depending on how a match is unfolding.

“My thoughts on hydration breaks? Don’t ask us players for our opinion, we’re very reactionary,” Mbappé said.

He explained that a team’s attitude towards a break can vary dramatically depending on whether they are performing well or struggling.

“If tomorrow we’re dominating at the 25th minute and there’s a hydration break, we’ll be angry because it breaks our rhythm. But if the weather is hot, or we’re being dominated, I’ll be happy,” he added.

Mbappé’s comments come as football continues to face challenges linked to rising temperatures around the world. In recent years, FIFA, UEFA and other football governing bodies have increasingly introduced hydration and cooling breaks during matches played in extreme heat to protect players’ health and safety.

The issue gained particular attention during the 2026 World Cup hosted in countries (Canada, USA and Mexico) with high temperatures and humidity levels.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that prolonged physical activity in extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and other health complications.

While some players and coaches argue that breaks can disrupt momentum and alter the flow of matches, sports scientists have generally supported the measures, saying they help players recover and maintain performance levels. FIFA guidelines allow referees to stop games temporarily when weather conditions pose potential risks to players.

The French superstar suggested that decisions on hydration breaks should be based on medical and scientific advice rather than the emotions of players during matches.
