Persson introduces fresh ideas as Black Queens prepare for WAFCON

Black Queens assistant coach Pierre Persson says he is focused on blending into the team’s existing structure while introducing new tactical ideas aimed at improving Ghana’s performance at the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Swedish coach, who joined head coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s technical team, has been assigned the responsibility of helping the team improve its possession game, passing accuracy and overall tactical organisation ahead of the continental tournament.

Persson explained that his role is to support the head coach by working closely with the players on key areas of the game, including ball movement, positioning and decision-making during matches.

“My role is to complement the head coach by working on passing drills, possession and tactics. The players are technically gifted and explosive, with many competing at top clubs in Europe. My job is to help them move the ball quicker, improve their movement off the ball and increase the tempo in possession,” he said.

Since joining the team’s training camp in Casablanca, Persson has emphasised intense training sessions designed to improve concentration, speed of play and precision in execution.

The assistant coach believes Ghana possesses a talented group of players capable of competing at the highest level, especially with several members of the squad gaining valuable experience from playing in competitive leagues across Europe.

The Black Queens are currently based in Casablanca as they continue preparations for the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will run from July 25 to August 16, 2026.

The tournament will provide Ghana with another opportunity to challenge for continental success after years of rebuilding the women’s national team.

The technical team is expected to use the remaining preparation period to fine-tune tactics, strengthen team cohesion and ensure the players are physically and mentally ready for the competition.
