Motsepe heads to Dakar amid Senegal title dispute

Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe is set to arrive in Dakar for high-level talks aimed at resolving growing tensions on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, following the annulment of Senegal’s African championship title by the CAF Appeals Committee.

The decision to strip Senegal of the title sparked widespread controversy within the country’s football fraternity, prompting the Senegalese Football Federation to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The move signals a firm stance by Senegal’s football authorities, who are seeking an independent review of the ruling.

Motsepe’s visit is part of CAF’s urgent efforts to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. The CAF president is expected to engage in direct discussions with Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Federation President Abdoulaye Fall.

The annulment of the title has not only raised legal questions but also stirred strong emotions among Senegalese fans, many of whom view the decision as unjust.

While details of the Appeals Committee’s ruling remain a subject of debate, the case now appears set for a broader legal and diplomatic process. The involvement of CAS could ultimately determine whether Senegal’s title is reinstated or the annulment upheld.

Motsepe’s mediation effort is expected to focus on restoring dialogue between CAF and Senegalese authorities while ensuring that due process is followed.

As anticipation builds ahead of the Dakar meetings, football fans across the continent follow closely as CAF navigates the crisis. For Senegal, the priority remains clear: securing what it believes is a rightful championship title, while defending the integrity of its football institutions.

Further developments are expected following the high-level engagements in Dakar.
