Former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel has shared his honest opinion about the coaching future of former teammate Cesc Fàbregas, saying it may be too early for him to take charge of a top club like Chelsea.
Fàbregas, a World Cup winner and former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, has recently begun his coaching journey after retiring from professional football.
His early work in Italy has attracted attention, with many praising his understanding of the game and leadership potential.
Speaking on his podcast, Mikel praised Fàbregas for his early progress in management, especially his work with Como 1907 in Italy.
However, he stressed that more experience is needed before moving to a high-pressure job in the Premier League.
“It’s a bit too early for Fabregas,” Mikel said. “We all hear about the success with Como in Italy. But for me, I just think it’s a bit too early. A couple more seasons, establish himself a bit.”
He explained that young coaches should take time to grow, learn, and build experience before managing elite clubs. According to him, a step-by-step process is important for long-term success in coaching.
Mikel also suggested that Fàbregas should first manage a smaller club in England before considering a big job like Chelsea.
He believes this would help him adjust better to the demands and pressure of English football.
“Get a bit more experience, maybe come to the Premier League, and coach a lesser team than Chelsea,” Mikel added. “Listen, we are not an experimental club. We’re not that club. We’re not an experimental football club.”
His comments highlight the high expectations and pressure that come with managing top Premier League teams. Clubs like Chelsea are often expected to compete for trophies immediately, leaving little room for learning on the job.
Mikel’s remarks suggest that experience, patience, and gradual development remain key factors in deciding when a young coach like Fabregas is ready for elite-level management.
