Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he came close to joining Liverpool during his time at Monaco, with his mother strongly pushing for a move to the Premier League club.
The France captain said his mother was a huge admirer of Liverpool under former manager Jürgen Klopp and wanted him to continue his career at Anfield.
Mbappé explained that Liverpool became a serious option when he had to decide on his next move after breaking into the Monaco first team.
“My mum’s favourite destination was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there. It’s a funny story because it’s the truth,” Mbappé said.
The forward recalled meeting Klopp and listening to the German manager explain his plans for Liverpool.
According to Mbappé, the meeting took place while he was on a plane with Klopp, who was trying to convince him to join the Reds.
“I remember we were on the plane, and he was explaining his project while I was telling him, ‘You don’t need to convince me more, you are Jürgen Klopp. It’s Liverpool. It’s a big club’,” he said.
Mbappé, however, ultimately decided against the move because he wanted to remain in France and play for his hometown club, Paris Saint-Germain.
He said his desire at the time was to stay close to home rather than move abroad at such a young age.
“In the end, I did not listen to my mum. I wanted to go to my city, to Paris. Play in France. I didn’t want to leave my country at that time,” he added.
Mbappé eventually left Monaco for PSG in 2017, where he spent seven seasons before moving to Real Madrid in 2024.
