Florentino Pérez has been re-elected as president of Real Madrid, extending his leadership of the Spanish giants until 2030.
Speaking after his victory, Pérez expressed his delight and gratitude to supporters, saying, “It’s a beautiful day for me and for all Madridistas”.
The 79-year-old secured 65 percent of the votes in Real Madrid’s first contested presidential election in two decades, defeating businessman Enrique Riquelme, who received 35 percent support from club members.
More than 33,000 members participated in the election, reflecting strong interest in the future direction of the club.
Following his victory, Pérez promised to continue working to maintain Real Madrid’s status as one of the world’s most successful football clubs.
“We have won the election and we will work to make the greatest club of all time even greater,” he said in his address to club members.
Pérez is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern football. Since first becoming Real Madrid president in 2000, he has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Under his leadership, Real Madrid has won numerous major trophies, including a record number of UEFA Champions League titles.
He is also credited with transforming the club into one of the most valuable sports organisations in the world.
His presidency has been associated with the famous “Galácticos” policy, which brought global stars such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Pérez now begins another four-year term facing high expectations from supporters. Reports suggest he plans to strengthen the squad with major signings while pursuing the club’s ambition of winning a 16th UEFA Champions League title.
