Ghana’s hopes of securing a strong start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers suffered another major setback after the Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Carlos Queiroz’s side appeared firmly in control after taking a 2-0 lead in the opening half, but a dramatic collapse allowed the visitors to score four times and claim all three points.
Queiroz made three changes to the team that lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire, with Benjamin Asare starting in goal, Jonas Adjetey replacing the injured Alexander Djiku and Felix Afena-Gyan coming into the attack.
Ghana took the lead in the 27th minute when Ernest Nuamah calmly converted a penalty after Jerome Opoku was brought down in the box following Abdul Fatawu Issahaku’s corner.
Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage six minutes later, drilling a low effort into the bottom corner to send the home supporters into celebration.
However, The Gambia responded strongly before the break. Mohammed Badamosi reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 37th minute before Ebrima Colley struck to level the game.
Ghana made two changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Benjamin Tetteh and Ibrahim Sulemana, but the Black Stars struggled to regain control.
The visitors completed their turnaround in the 71st minute when Badamosi finished a quick counter-attack to put The Gambia ahead for the first time.
Further attacking changes failed to rescue Ghana, with Augustine Boakye and Christopher Bonsu Baah introduced later in the half.
Colley then sealed a remarkable victory for The Gambia in the 88th minute with his second goal of the night.
The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group C without a point from their opening two matches, while The Gambia move to six points from two games.
