Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane has addressed the media ahead of the club’s FA Cup clash with Leeds United, speaking on team news, recent poor form, and the mood inside the squad.

McFarlane confirmed a setback for young attacker Estevao, who will miss the remainder of the season.

“Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season. He is going to be out for a little bit of time. We’re here to support him,” he said.

He added that Joao and Cole are back in training, but their availability will be decided later.

“They trained; they’re in a good place. We don’t know yet, we’ll make a call tomorrow.”

On Estevao’s chances of making the World Cup, McFarlane was unsure.

“I’m not sure on that if I’m honest. He won’t be available for us. I’m sure he’s very hopeful he can make the World Cup but I don’t know on that.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s game against Leeds, McFarlane stressed the importance of focus.

“Everyone’s excited, the whole group, the whole club, it’s why we do the job we do,” he said.

When asked about Chelsea’s struggles, he refused to blame others.

“It’s not my place to say what’s gone wrong. My full focus is on Leeds; we’ve got a massive game on Sunday.”

He also confirmed there had been no crisis meeting with players.

“We haven’t had a clear-the-air meeting. We’ve got the group focused on Sunday.”

McFarlane revealed he had spoken with former boss Liam Rosenior after recent changes at the club.

“I spoke to him on the phone on Wednesday. He was good. I’ve got a lot of respect for Liam.”

Addressing the poor performance against Brighton, he admitted improvement is needed.

“It wasn’t good enough vs Brighton, we know that. We need to figure out the reasons why and make sure the group are in a better place for Sunday.”

He added that the squad remains united despite recent setbacks.

“Everyone is united. We want to win every game from now until the end of the season.”

McFarlane also said the players must take responsibility.

“They’re on the pitch, they’re top players that can perform at the highest level and that hasn’t happened for some reason.”
