Pro-Bawumia camp wins 92% of NPP Ashanti Constituency Executive positions

The camp of former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the leading force in the party’s constituency executive elections in the Ashanti Region, securing approximately 92 per cent of the newly elected executives.

The elections, held across the region on Saturday and Sunday, witnessed candidates associated with Dr. Bawumia achieving significant victories in the majority of constituencies, thereby further solidifying his influence within the NPP’s traditional political stronghold.

The results reveal that aspirants who openly endorsed Dr. Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries captured the majority of executive positions, reinforcing his grassroots support as the NPP gears up for reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Even in constituencies where a candidate perceived to be affiliated with Dr. Bawumia faced defeat, the winning candidate was also viewed as a supporter of the former Vice President, ensuring that the constituency remained within the Bawumia camp.

Numerous constituencies experienced clean sweeps by pro-Bawumia candidates, with all available executive positions awarded to his supporters.

In regions where the sweep was not as extensive, candidates aligned with him still managed to secure at least 70 per cent of the executive slots.

Only around eight per cent of the newly elected executives were reportedly individuals who had previously campaigned for Kennedy Agyapong or Bryan Acheampong during the party’s presidential primary contest.

Although some of these executives have since expressed their support for Dr. Bawumia, party insiders contend that their political history and prior campaign activities indicate they were originally aligned with other presidential hopefuls.

The results of the constituency elections are broadly regarded as a considerable enhancement for Dr. Bawumia’s political position in the Ashanti Region and are anticipated to bolster his sway over the party’s grassroots organisations as the NPP recuperates after its loss in the 2024 general election.
