Yagbonwura calls for stronger Gonja-Ashanti relations

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has called for stronger collaboration between the Gonja and Ashanti kingdoms, emphasising that their longstanding relationship remains crucial to promoting peace, unity and development in Ghana.

The call was delivered on his behalf by the Yapeiwura, A.B.T. Zakaria, during a courtesy visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Addressing the gathering, the Yapeiwura said the visit was aimed at reaffirming the historic friendship between the two kingdoms and strengthening the spirit of cooperation that has existed between them over the years.

He noted that the Gonja Kingdom values its relationship with the Ashanti Kingdom and remains committed to deepening ties for the mutual benefit of their people.

The Yagbonwura also acknowledged the Asantehene’s contribution to peacebuilding efforts across the country, describing his leadership as instrumental in maintaining national cohesion.

He commended the collaborative role played by the Asantehene, the Yagbonwura and the Nayiri in fostering peace and stability in various parts of Ghana.

He further praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his involvement in the successful resolution of the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, describing the outcome as a clear demonstration of the power of dialogue, wisdom and effective traditional leadership in resolving conflicts.

Touching on challenges confronting traditional authorities, the Yagbonwura identified land disputes as a growing concern in many traditional areas.

He warned that unresolved conflicts over land continue to hamper development, deter investment and create divisions within communities and families.

To address the challenge, he urged the Gonja and Ashanti kingdoms to share experiences and best practices in land administration and dispute resolution.

According to him, stronger cooperation between the two traditional states would not only benefit their respective jurisdictions but also contribute significantly to national peace, stability and sustainable development.

The visit underscored the enduring relationship between the Gonja and Ashanti kingdoms and their shared commitment to advancing unity and progress through traditional leadership.
