Several injured in alleged military brutality in Bunkpurugu

Several residents of Bunkpurugu in the North East Region have sustained injuries following alleged assaults by military personnel deployed to the area amid a chieftaincy dispute.

About four people who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Bunkpurugu District Hospital, according to residents.

One of the victims alleged that soldiers entered his home around 3 am, damaged the door, and assaulted members of the household.

“They came to our house around 3 am. They have even destroyed my door. I am appealing to the government to call them to order. My brother is injured, he cannot walk,” he said.

He added that he suffered injuries to his back and right foot, questioning why residents inside their homes were being targeted during the security operation.

“Your target should be those who are disobeying the law outside, not those of us inside our houses,” he said.

Security personnel have since been deployed to maintain order, with authorities also enforcing measures aimed at containing further violence.
