Parts of Kumasi will experience planned power outages on May 6 and 7 as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) installs new, more powerful transformers to improve electricity supply in the city.
ECG says the lights will go off between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both days. The power cuts are necessary so engineers can safely remove old equipment and install the new transformers as part of a major upgrade.
During the work, some parts of the 33kV power network will be shut down for a while, and power will be carefully managed on some 11kV lines.
The company explained that it is replacing two older transformers with stronger ones that can handle more power. This is expected to reduce pressure on the system and improve overall performance.
ECG says the upgrade is needed because Kumasi is growing fast, and more people are using electricity. This has led to recent power fluctuations and outages, not because there isn’t enough power, but because demand has increased.
An ECG official said the new transformers will help stabilise the system and make the electricity supply more reliable.
Teams from Accra and Kumasi are working together on the project, which is expected to be completed within two days, with power fully restored shortly after.
ECG acknowledged that the outages will inconvenience residents but said the work is necessary to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply in the long run.
