Police officers at the Nkwanta–Breweniase checkpoint on the Eastern Corridor in the Oti Region have seized a large quantity of ammunition and arrested two men linked to its transport.

The officers stopped a MAN Togo cargo truck with registration number GW 9927–13 during a routine inspection.

The vehicle was travelling from Accra-Tema Station to Damanko in the Nkwanta North District. During a search of the truck, the officers discovered a large stash of ammunition along with a foreign-made gun.

The team recovered over 20,000 rounds in total. The items included 7,000 AA cartridges, 3,000 BB cartridges, and 1,124 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, among others.

Authorities identified the driver as 26-year-old Kende Richard. His assistant, 20-year-old Latif Adam, was also in the vehicle.

Police arrested both men, and they are now in custody, helping with investigations.

Meanwhile, the Nkwanta South Police Command is supporting the case. Officers are working to find out where the ammunition came from, where it was headed, and whether a larger network is involved.

This interception comes at a time when security has been tightened in the Nkwanta Municipality. Authorities have increased monitoring in response to ongoing security concerns and repeated conflicts in parts of the area.

Officials say they want to stop the movement of weapons that could worsen tensions or lead to crime.

Many members of the public have praised the officers at the checkpoint. They say the team showed strong professionalism, alertness, and good intelligence in carrying out the operation.

Investigations are still ongoing, and the police are expected to share more details as the case unfolds.
