A driver and his mate narrowly escaped death after armed robbers attacked a cargo truck on the Bibiani–Goaso road close to Sereso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The victim, Mohammed Yakubu, 60, was operating a blue-black Mitsubishi cargo truck with registration number AW 621-12, travelling from Akodie towards Kumasi when the incident took place, just minutes away from where Berekum Chelsea FC was recently attacked.

According to eyewitness reports, the assailants had obstructed the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and opened fire as the truck neared, striking the driver in the abdomen.

In an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Adom News, an eyewitness narrated that the mate rushed to a nearby community to raise the alarm, prompting residents to respond swiftly and transport the victim on a tricycle to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency care.

Residents of Sereso express that they are living in fear due to ongoing armed robbery incidents along the route and are urging the Inspector General of Police to establish regular checkpoints to enhance security.

Authorities have yet to provide a statement regarding the attack as investigations are ongoing.

This comes after an armed robbery attack left a Berekum Chelsea player dead on Sunday on their return journey from Samreboi to Berekum after their match against FC Samartex 1996.

According to an official statement from the club, the team encountered a group of heavily armed robbers who had blocked the road to halt their movement.

The assailants, described as masked men wielding guns and assault rifles, reportedly opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse to safety.

The sudden attack forced players and technical staff to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes for cover, in a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire.

During the chaos, one player, Dominic Frimpong, who joined the team on loan from Aduana FC, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed due to the severity of the injury.
