Police arrest 258 suspects over Nsawam–Adoagyiri violence

Police have arrested 258 people after violent clashes erupted in Nsawam-Adoagyiri on July 7.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command carried out the operation with support from the National Operations Directorate following intelligence gathered after the unrest.

Investigators believe the violence was linked to a renewed conflict involving youth groups, similar to disturbances reported in the area last year.

Police said some of those involved allegedly looted shops, set fire to an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer, vandalised the Oko Anadwo Palace and a nearby astroturf facility, and robbed mobile money vendors.

The attacks left many residents frightened and disrupted normal life in the community.

In a statement, the Eastern South Regional Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent David Fianko-Okyere, said officers made the arrests during an intelligence-led operation.

The police also recovered two locally made firearms, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, tablets believed to be tramadol and Viagra, and several mobile phones that investigators believe could help with the inquiry.

All 258 suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
