Parliament is set to reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, for an emergency sitting following a petition by the Minority Caucus over a number of recent cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
The emergency sitting comes after French authorities seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk. The cocaine was found in a container that reportedly came from Ghana.
The seizure has raised serious concerns about Ghana’s ports, cargo inspection systems and the measures in place to prevent the country from being used as a transit route for illegal drugs.
The Minority Caucus, led by the First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu, invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution to request the emergency sitting.
The one-day sitting is expected to give lawmakers the opportunity to ask questions and seek answers from the relevant state institutions about the seizures and Ghana’s involvement in the movement of the consignments.
Lawmakers are expected to look into how the container was processed and cleared for export. They will also examine which agencies were responsible for inspecting and monitoring the consignment and whether there were any weaknesses in Ghana’s customs and security systems.
The sitting comes at a time when there are growing calls for greater accountability and stronger cooperation among state institutions in the fight against drug trafficking.
The Minority has also asked for clarification on other major drug seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana. Parliament is therefore expected to look at the wider impact of these incidents on Ghana’s reputation and national security.
