NPP members oppose resumption of Asante Mampong polling station elections

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Mampong Constituency of the Ashanti Region have strongly opposed plans to resume the party’s suspended polling station executive elections.

According to the group, key concerns that led to the earlier halt of the process remain unresolved.

The aggrieved members, who addressed a press conference in Mampong on Saturday, argued that proceeding with the elections without addressing allegations of irregularities would undermine the credibility and unity of the party in the constituency.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Isaac Owusu Acheampong accused some constituency executives of attempting to impose what he described as an “unapproved” voter register on party members.

According to him, the electoral process had been marred by a lack of transparency and inconsistencies surrounding the number of polling stations expected to participate in the rescheduled exercise.

“The way we do our politics, they build up from the polling stations. Then from there, you go to the coordinators, constituency, regional and national. If you allow yourself to be cheated at the polling station level, that is the end of you,” he told journalists.

The polling station elections in Asante Mampong were initially suspended on May 14 following confusion and disagreements over the voter register being used for the exercise.

Reports from local media indicated that tensions at some polling centres nearly degenerated into chaos, forcing party officials to halt the process temporarily.

The concerned members claim that the constituency has 145 polling stations, each expected to elect seven executives, but alleged that some polling stations had either been excluded or improperly merged without adequate explanation.

They further argued that several aspirants were unfairly disqualified from contesting the elections.

Some of the aggrieved members also alleged that loyal party supporters had their names removed from the electoral register, an accusation they believe was intended to influence the outcome of the internal elections.

The group has therefore appealed to the Ashanti Regional leadership of the NPP to intervene immediately and ensure that the process is conducted fairly and transparently before any elections resume.

They warned that failure to resolve the matter could deepen divisions within the party ahead of future national elections.

The Asante Mampong Constituency, currently represented in Parliament by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has historically been regarded as one of the strongholds of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
