A dispute over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency-level elections held on August 9, 2026, has escalated into legal action, with some party members challenging the validity of the polls.
The dispute reportedly began after some members, including Gideon Poku, discovered that their names had allegedly been removed from the polling station album.
They claimed the removals were linked to their opposition to the then constituency secretary, who was also seeking to become constituency chairman.
The aggrieved members subsequently went to court and obtained an injunction against the Electoral Area Elections.
They alleged that despite being served with the court processes, the Constituency Secretariat proceeded with the elections.
They also claimed that the Electoral Commission (EC) declined to conduct the polls because of the injunction.
The disputed elections were nevertheless allegedly held on August 9 using electoral officers whose authority was questioned.
The members have since initiated contempt proceedings against Constituency Chairman Alhaji Usman and Rachael Tutu over the alleged breach of the court order.
Another court process has reportedly been served on the purported winners, seeking to prevent them from presenting themselves as duly elected constituency executives and to have the elections annulled.
Petitions have also been submitted to the NPP headquarters, although the petitioners claim no action has been taken.
Tensions reportedly increased following an alleged assault at the party headquarters involving a bailiff and a plaintiff, who the aggrieved members claim were assaulted by newly elected Constituency Chairman Issa Sawadogo and some executives.
The incident was reportedly reported to the Nima Police Station and remains under investigation. The allegations of assault and breach of the court order have yet to be determined by the relevant authorities and the courts.
