The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for stricter rules to prevent sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) from being appointed to public boards and procurement committees of institutions funded by the government.
The party believes that MPs should not hold these positions while serving in Parliament. According to the NPP, this would help Parliament remain independent, reduce possible conflicts of interest and increase public trust in the legislature.
The NPP’s position was presented by the Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Sulemana Tampuli Alhassan, at a press conference on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The press conference was held as the party shared its views on proposed constitutional reforms.
Alhassan Tampuli said the NPP supports the Constitutional Review Committee’s (CRC) recommendation for stronger constitutional rules to prevent conflicts of interest among public officials.
He particularly mentioned MPs who serve on boards of publicly funded institutions.
He explained that putting these restrictions directly into the Constitution would provide stronger and more lasting protection than depending only on ordinary laws or administrative rules.
“The CRC recommended stronger constitutional conflict of interest restrictions and that Members of Parliament should not be serving on public boards and procurement bodies of publicly funded entities. Our government rejected the need for constitutional amendments, relying instead on proposed legislation on a code of conduct for public officers.
“We think that the recommendation of the CRC is very good. The constitutional guardrails will be better served if we don’t have Members of Parliament serving on various boards. We believe that the reform would strengthen the integrity and independence of Parliament. It will help safeguard public resources and reinforce public confidence in Parliament.”
The NPP says the proposed change would create clearer boundaries between MPs and public institutions. The party believes this could help protect public resources and make Parliament more independent in carrying out its responsibilities.
