Nkwanta attacks: IGP deploys special operations unit

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a Special Operations Support Team to Nkwanta in the Oti Region following recent attacks that resulted in deaths and injuries.

According to a statement issued by the Oti Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on June 20, 2026, the deployment is part of efforts to strengthen security in the area, restore calm and protect residents.

The police said the recent attacks in the Nkwanta South Municipality claimed lives and left several people injured, prompting the Police Administration to step up security operations in the municipality.

As part of these measures, the IGP on June 20, 2026, dispatched a Special Operations Support Team from the National Police Headquarters in Accra to reinforce existing security arrangements and assist in maintaining law and order while investigations continue.

The Police assured residents that security personnel will remain on the ground and continue to monitor the situation closely. They also urged the public to stay calm and cooperate with security agencies.

Residents have further been encouraged to share any credible information that could help investigators identify those behind the attacks.

“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring peace within the municipality,” the statement emphasized.
