Paul Merson questions Palmer’s future amid Chelsea’s European uncertainty

Paul Merson, a former Arsenal midfielder, has cast doubt on Cole Palmer’s long-term future at Chelsea FC, warning that the young star may not be keen on playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season.

Palmer has been one of the few standout performers for Chelsea in a campaign that has largely failed to meet expectations. The England international has enjoyed an impressive season, consistently delivering goals and assists while emerging as a key figure in the club’s attack.

His performances have not only underlined his importance to the team but also elevated his profile as one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League.

However, Chelsea’s struggles in the league have overshadowed individual brilliance. The Blues have endured an inconsistent run of form, dropping points in crucial fixtures and failing to establish themselves among the top sides.

As a result, they remain outside the qualification places (the top four) for the UEFA Champions League (UCL), with the prospect of settling for a place in the Conference League becoming increasingly realistic after their loss to Manchester United.

Such a scenario, Merson believes, could test Palmer’s commitment to the club. The former Arsenal midfielder suggested that players of Palmer’s calibre would naturally want to compete at the highest level of European football rather than in the continent’s third-tier competition.

Merson also pointed to Manchester United as a potential destination, noting that if they secure Champions League qualification, they could become an attractive option for the Chelsea forward. The opportunity to play on Europe’s biggest stage could prove decisive for a player entering a crucial stage of his career.

Despite the speculation, Chelsea is expected to view Palmer as untouchable, given his importance to their long-term project and rebuilding efforts.

Merson made these remarks on Sky Sports, where he questioned whether Palmer would be willing to feature in the Conference League if Chelsea fail to secure Champions League football.
