A Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor in Juapong in the Volta Region says she has been left in financial distress after a customer allegedly tricked her into handing over GH¢12,000, which he reportedly lost through sports betting.
The vendor, Srah Priscilla, said the customer approached her claiming he needed the money to clear an MTN loan.
He allegedly assured her he would repay the amount immediately after securing another loan.
Trusting his promise, Priscilla transferred the GH¢12,000.
However, she said the customer failed to repay the money and began avoiding her calls.
Growing suspicious, she tracked him to another MoMo vendor, where he was allegedly attempting a similar transaction. He was confronted and later handed over to the police for investigations.
Priscilla claimed that checks on the suspect’s phone revealed he had used the entire GH¢12,000 for sports betting but lost it all.
The incident has left the vendor under immense financial pressure, as her employer has demanded that she replace the missing funds. She says she cannot afford to do so and fears the consequences.
The case has renewed concerns over Mobile Money fraud in Ghana, with authorities urging vendors to verify claims before releasing large sums of money to customers.
