Minority demands full account of GH¢10.92bn Accra-Kumasi Expressway spending

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to provide a comprehensive breakdown of the GH¢10.92 billion reportedly allocated to the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, insisting that Ghanaians deserve full transparency over the use of public funds.

Speaking in Parliament, Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin questioned the justification for the expenditure and urged the government to disclose how the money is expected to be utilised across the various phases of the project.

According to the Minority, while they support investments in critical infrastructure, projects of such financial magnitude must be accompanied by detailed information on funding arrangements, procurement processes, project timelines and the scope of works.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that Parliament has a constitutional responsibility to ensure accountability in the management of public resources.

He argued that providing a full cost breakdown would enable lawmakers and the public to assess whether the proposed expenditure offers value for money.

The Minority also called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and other relevant state agencies to explain the basis for the project cost and clarify the financing model being adopted.

They maintained that transparency is essential to maintaining public confidence in major national infrastructure projects.

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to be one of Ghana’s largest road infrastructure projects, aimed at improving travel between the country’s two largest cities, reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion and boosting trade and economic activities along the corridor.

However, the project’s reported GH¢10.92 billion price tag has sparked public interest, with calls for greater scrutiny of the expenditure before implementation begins.

The Minority believes that a detailed financial and technical presentation to Parliament would promote accountability and ensure that taxpayers’ money is used efficiently.
