The Ghana Police Service has recovered GH¢140,000 and seized an AK-47 assault rifle after a robbery targeting a mobile money vendor in Lashibi, in the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement signed by the Accra Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police said the incident occurred on Thursday, July 3, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two armed men riding a motorbike attacked the mobile money operator while he was driving home from work with GH¢140,000 in a bag.
According to Police, the robbers opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, damaging the front windscreen and the right rear tyre before taking the bag containing the cash.
Investigators said the suspects tried to escape on their motorbike after the robbery. However, the victim reportedly fired at them, killing one of the attackers at the scene.
The second suspect fled the area but abandoned the stolen bag, allowing officers to recover the full GH¢140,000. Police confirmed that the victim escaped the attack without any injuries.
A search of the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Crime scene investigators also retrieved five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells.
The Police have deposited the suspect’s body at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and an autopsy, while the Accra Regional Police Command continues investigations into the case.
Police said they are actively pursuing the second suspect and appealed to the public to provide any information that could lead to the person’s arrest.
