An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, identified as Amoakoh and popularly known as Ahuoden, has died in a motorbike accident at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
A police officer attached to the Central North Regional Command, who was riding the motorbike, sustained severe injuries and is currently in critical condition.
According to eyewitness Joseph Okyere, popularly known as Assin Trendz, the two officers were travelling towards the Assin Fosu Main Lorry Station from the Kumasi Road at about 1:00 a.m. on Monday.
The motorbike was reportedly travelling at high speed on the largely deserted road when it veered off the highway and crashed into the concrete staircase of a store near the Assin Fosu Town Market at Ajeep.
Amoakoh, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, hit his head against a roadside gutter during the crash and died at the scene.
Bystanders rushed the two officers to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where medical personnel pronounced Amoakoh dead on arrival.
The surviving police officer, known as Stone, suffered severe fractures to his left arm and left leg and remains on admission, receiving intensive care.
Officers from the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) have visited the scene and impounded the damaged motorbike for examination.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
The body of the deceased immigration officer has been deposited at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.
