The Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has disclosed that he resigned from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago, clarifying that he no longer participates in the board’s meetings.
Dr. Asiama explained that although the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), provides for the Bank of Ghana to have representation on the GoldBod Board, it does not make it mandatory for the central bank’s Governor to serve in that capacity.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” Dr. Asiama told journalists.
His disclosure follows calls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for his removal from the GoldBod Board over concerns that his simultaneous positions as Governor of the Bank of Ghana and a board member could create a conflict of interest.
The concerns were raised by former Finance Minister and NPP Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, during a press briefing by the party on September 1.
The NPP questioned the relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, particularly the central bank’s role in financing GoldBod’s gold-purchasing operations and reported losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.
However, Dr. Asiama maintained that the law permits the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the GoldBod Board by either its Governor or another senior official with a rank not below director.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.
He further emphasised that the legislation does not require him, in his capacity as Governor, to occupy the position on the board.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there”.
