New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has engaged the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners as part of efforts to identify practical reforms to address challenges facing the sector.
Dr. Bawumia held the engagement on Thursday, August 27, alongside members of the NPP’s Identifiable Groups Committee on the Extractive Sector.
In a Facebook post, he said discussions focused on the challenges confronting small-scale miners and measures to promote responsible mining, protect the environment and sustain livelihoods.
“We discussed the challenges facing small-scale mining and practical reforms to promote responsible mining, protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen local value addition,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for practical reforms to make small-scale mining more sustainable and productive while addressing its environmental impact.
The engagement forms part of the NPP’s ongoing consultations with key stakeholders in the extractive sector to gather views that could help shape policies and reforms for the industry.
