The family of late Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo has petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death in a motorbike accident.
Ivan, 20, a second-year law student, died on August 27, 2026, after the YANGO-operated motorbike he was riding on the Tema Motorway was allegedly pursued by a police patrol motorbike.
According to the family’s lawyers, the rider, Samuel Arthur Wesley, told investigators that the police motorbike caught up with them and “hit them from the back of the motorbike,” causing both men to fall and suffer severe injuries.
Although the family has cooperated with the coroner’s inquest and autopsy, it says several key questions remain unanswered.
These include details about the exact accident location, how police were alerted, who transported the victims to Tema General Hospital, the YANGO rider’s statement, the whereabouts of Ivan’s phone, available road-camera footage, and the identities of the police officers involved in the pursuit.
The family also said it had been promised access to relevant traffic-camera footage but had not received it after more than a week.
The lawyers said, “These unanswered questions leave our client and his family with a bit of doubt and suspicion,” and urged the CID to conduct a “full-scale public enquiry” to establish exactly what happened and determine the circumstances that led to Ivan’s death.
They further called for the matter to be treated urgently and for a report to be issued to bring the case to a conclusive end.
