DVLA adds six Ghanaian languages to driving theory tests

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian languages on its computer-based driving theory test platform to make the licensing process more accessible to applicants who struggle with English.

DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced the initiative on Monday, October 12, 2026.

He said the move was intended to remove language barriers and enable more applicants to demonstrate their understanding of road signs, traffic regulations and safe driving practices.

The languages currently available on the platform are Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema and Hausa. The authority uses translation software to allow applicants to take the mandatory theory examination in a language they understand.

Mr Kotey said the DVLA was working to introduce additional local languages to extend the service to more prospective drivers across the country.

Beyond the language initiative, the chief executive announced improvements to the authority’s customer service systems, including SMS reminders for driving licence renewals.

Under the arrangement, licence holders receive a notification one month before their licences expire, followed by another reminder two weeks before the renewal deadline. The service depends on customers maintaining their registered mobile numbers.

Mr Kotey added that the DVLA was developing a similar notification system to alert vehicle owners when their roadworthiness certificates were due for renewal.

The authority is also introducing an electronic library and a queue management system as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery at its offices.
