Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem Sai has explained that the arrest of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport was linked to an alleged attempt to access money in a frozen bank account through what authorities describe as “false means”.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, July 4, Dr Sai said Mr Abdul-Wahab, who is currently facing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic, had earlier been granted permission by the High Court to travel to the United Kingdom for a short stay.
He said events that unfolded after the court’s decision led law enforcement officers to intervene before the former NAFCO boss could leave the country.
“Law enforcement officers have, a while ago, arrested Mr Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport,” Dr Sai wrote.
According to the Deputy Attorney-General, the arrest followed an alleged attempt by Mr Abdul-Wahab to withdraw money from his frozen Republic Bank account using “false means.”
“It was, however, Mr Aludiba’s attempt to use false means to empty his frozen bank account with Republic Bank on Thursday which occasioned tonight’s arrest,” he stated.
Dr Sai further disclosed that the Attorney-General intends to challenge the High Court’s decision that allowed Mr Abdul-Wahab to travel abroad.
“The learned Attorney-General will, on Monday, seek a review of the court order which granted Mr Aludiba leave to travel out of the country,” he added.
