Police have arrested convicted fraudster Eric Afoakwa, popularly known as “Chad,” after he allegedly attempted to leave the country, bringing an end to a years-long manhunt following his disappearance after his conviction.
The Ghana Police Service said officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit arrested Afoakwa on July 6, 2026, acting on the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police.
Afoakwa was convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court in 2019 on charges including money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents, and tax evasion.
He was found guilty on five of the six charges brought against him.
Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa sentenced him to eight years in prison, with all sentences to run concurrently.
The court also ordered him to refund $132,660 to the complainant.
Following the judgment, Afoakwa went into hiding, prompting the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to declare him wanted and appeal to the public for information on his whereabouts.
Police say he will be handed over to EOCO to enforce the court’s ruling and begin serving his prison sentence.
